David Leigh grew up in Townsville and has spent much of his life fishing the estuaries, rivers and headlands within a 100 km radius of the city of Townsville.
These areas produce some of the best live bait and sight lure fishing that North Queensland has to offer. Guiding fishermen to target barramundi and many other species that the area has to offer, using lures, fly, soft plastics and live baits.
On any given day you could experience encounters with many species such as Mangrove Jack, Fingermark, Javelin (commonly known as Grunter), Bream, Trevally, Queen Fish, Queensland Groper, Estuary Cod, Salmon, Flathead as well as others. Most of these fish are targeted in the closed season for Barramundi, which runs annually from November through February.
The prime period for fishing is usually during the open Barramundi season, which runs February through November. Depending on how much of a `wet season' we have had, the run-off between February through to May provides the very best opportunities, with the next best period being September through November.
Specialist sight casting of lures, flys and soft plastics can be done all year round and will see the crew from Fair Dinkum Fishing travel to many different areas within 100 km of the city depending on our guests. Many different animals and wildlife can be encountered during a day on the water, even saltwater crocodiles, so be sure to bring your camera.
